Once, the
great Zulu kings, Shaka, Dingaan, Cetswayo hunted here, but
also realized the
importance of their natural wealth. The laws they laid down, form the
basis of conservation
today.
After the parks were proclaimed Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve in 1895, larger heards of game and the
'Big Five'
increased in numbers.
In the 1950's and 60's-"Operation Rhino" was started. Almost brought to
extinction, the White
Rhino population is now stable and florishing thanks to some hard
working enviromentalists.
Other focus points which contribute to the reputation of the Hluhluwe
Umfolozi game reserve are
amongs other,its
spectacular fauna and flora, the Wilderness trails, and recently
upgraded "Centenary game
Capture unit" where game management has set high standards for the whole
of the African
continent and the world.
The Area of the Hluhluwe Imfolozi game reserve is 96000 ha.
Even though the name of the reserve recently has been changed to
Hluhluwe Imfolozi, most of the time the old name Hluhluwe Umfolozi is
still used .
Hluhluwe is
pronounced as sh-lou-sh-lou-way.
